According to the State Bar of Texas, the board was established to "promote the availability, accessibility, and quality of the services of attorneys to the public in particular areas of the law." TBLS operates under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court of Texas.
TBLS certifies attorneys in 21, distinct legal practice areas. Paralegals may be certified in seven categories. Lawyers can be Board Certified® in the following areas of law: administrative, civil appellate, civil trial, bankruptcy, consumer/commercial, criminal/criminal appellate, probate/estate planning, family, health, immigration, workers' compensation, tax, real estate, personal injury, oil/gas/mineral, labor/employment, and juvenile law.
The Certification Process
As a Board Certified® Austin family law attorney, Ms. Menduni is considered a legal expert in her field. She is well-versed in legal issues related to marriage, divorce, adoption, support, custody, and property ownership. The TBLS certification process is extensive, testing the lawyer's understanding of law, experience, and involvement in their specific field of law. TBLS certified attorneys must have at least five years of legal experience.
The lawyer must have practiced in their specialized field for at least three years. Additionally, attorneys are required to complete a Texas Board-approved Continuing Legal Education course, provide no less than ten qualified references, and provide relevant documentation of their legal experience. Finally, lawyers must complete an extensive examination. This test takes an entire day to complete.
A Brief History of TBLS
The Texas Supreme Court created TBLS on July 16th, 1974 as part of the Texas Plan for Recognition and Regulation of Specialization in the Law. The Board is designed to advance the quality of legal representation in Texas by awarding topnotch legal professionals with specialization certification. In short, TBLS acknowledges attorney who demonstrate a distinct level of understanding, experience, professionalism, and quality in a specific practice area.
A 12-member board oversees the certification process. This is selected by the President of the State Bar of Texas. Additionally, the Supreme Court of Texas may exercise jurisdiction over the board. As Board Certified® family lawyer, Ms. Menduni is recognized by TBLS as one of the state's topnotch family law attorneys. This distinction is only given to a small percentage of lawyers in the state.
